My cat is eating the litter, what should I do?

  • While this litter is made from natural ingredients, it is not meant for animal or human consumption. Contact Poison Center at 1-800-222-1222 if you suspect that a child has ingested any amount. We also encourage monitoring your litter box; if you believe that a large quantity has been ingested by your cat, discontinue use immediately and consult your veterinarian.
  • It is a natural behaviour for kittens aged around 4 to 8 weeks to engage in oral exploration and as such, please do not use this litter if your cat is under 8 weeks in age.
  • Follow the transition instructions for optimal adjustment; Start with 50% of Really Great Cat Litter and top with 50% of your previous litter. For the following replacement, start with 75% of Really Great Cat Litter and top with 25% of your previous litter. Continue to increase the proportion of Really Great Cat Litter until you’ve fully phased out of your previous litter.
  • Occasionally, cats munching on non-food items can be an indication of a nutritional deficiency. Continue to monitor your cat’s behavior and if your cat is sampling other materials, follow up with your vet to investigate macronutrient imbalances.
  • If your cat is eating the litter, avoid punishing this behavior as it could create litter box aversion; instead, redirect their attention to curb the behavior. Follow the transition instructions for optimal adjustment.
